Catherine Hanson, 82, Early Resident Here Dies Sunday

Death came quietly to Mrs. Catherine Hanson, 82, in her sleep early Sunday morning at her home here, after being in failing health for several months. She suffered a stroke early last fall and was confined to a hospital for several weeks and was then moved to her home, where her daughter, Miss Sadie Hanson, has cared for her.

Mrs. Hanson has been a resident of Wyoming for 46 years, where she and her husband, Frank Hanson, homesteaded in the Hat Creek area, and during the years have acquired more land and built up one of the best ranches in this part of the state.

Five years ago Mr. and Mrs. Hanson retired from active ranching and moved to Lusk. Their son, Dan Hanson and wife, took over the Hat Creek ranch.

Catherine Clair Burke was born in Winona, Minnesota, October 13, 1866. She was the oldest of five daughters born to James and Margaret Burke. When she was 16 years of age her father died and she was obliged to quit school and seek employment.

In 1903 she came to Wyoming, where she was cook at the Tom Bell ranch at Node, and while there met and married Frank Hanson. It was then that they moved to the Hat Creek vicinity.

They are the parents of two children, Dan Hanson of Hat Creek, and Miss Sadie Hanson of Lusk. A daughter by a former marriage, Mrs. Margaret Miller of Lusk, passed away last year.

Survivors besides her husband and son and daughter are two sisters, Mrs. Margaret Stannard and Mame Mellor of O'Neill, Nebr., and two half sisters, Dorothy Reese and Sara Porter of Ralston, Pa.; six grandchildren, Demaris, Thomas and James Miller of Lusk, and Oliver John, Cathryn Clare and Brock Frank Hanson of Hat Creek.

Rosary services were held in the Peet Chapel on Monday evening, and were in charge of the Reverend Father Clement Orth of Wheatland, in the absence of Father Elmer Mulcahy.

Funeral services were conducted from St. Leo's Catholic Church at 9:00 o'clock Tuesday morning, and were also in charge of Father Clement.

Music was furnished by the church choir.

Old-time friends acted as the casket bearers and were Gaylord Anderson, Dudley Fields, Henry Wasserburger, Arthur Thompson, Henry McGinnis and A. E. DeGering.

Interment was made in the Lusk cemetery.

Among the out-of-town relatives and friends here for the services were Mrs. Laura Brooks, Mrs. Margaret Stannard and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Arbuthnot and family, all of O'Neill, Nebr.; Mr. and Mrs. D.J. Olinger of Cheyenne, and Mr. and Mrs. J. Elmer Brock and Culbertson Brock of Kaycee, Wyo.
