Mamie Deuel, Early Kirtley Resident, Dies Fri. Morning

Mrs. "Mamie" Deuel, 85 and a pioneer resident of the Kirtley community, died at the Memorial Hospital Friday morning, Feb. 27. Her death was attributed indirectly to a fractured hip which she suffered a few weeks ago, as she had been in fairly good health up to that time. She had been a patient at the Manring Convalescent Home for some time.

She was Miriam Ann Nelson born Sept. 1867 in Lampton County, Canada, Province of Ontario, the daughter of Edwin and Eliza Nelson, and spent her girlhood in Iowa.

Mar. 4, 1890 she was married to John Austin Deuel at Chesterfield, Ia. and they became the parents of six children, three of whom, Lillie, Ethel and Esther, previously died.

In 1892 this family was among the homestead settlers of the Kirtley community, some 20 miles northeast of Lusk. Later the family lived in and near Harrison, Nebr. for a time and then located at Van Tassell. Mr. Deuel died Dec. 15, 1925 and Mrs. Deuel continued to make her home at Van Tassell until 1930 when she moved to Lusk.

Survivors include her three children, E. Floyd Deuel of Cheyenne, Leo Deuel of Wheatland and Mrs. Bertha Bancroft of Van Tassell; seven grandchildren, Mrs. Vern Knowles of Medicine Bow; Lavern Garretson of Fort Collins, Colo., Virgil Garretson of Elk Mountain; Mrs. John Schmid of Cheyenne; Charles Bancroft of Riverton; Mrs. Pete A. Owens and Mrs. Kenneth Riley of Lusk; and 16 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Peet Chapel with the Rev. Raymond Hoffman, pastor of St. George Episcopal Church, officiating. The songs, "Old Rugged Cross: and "Beautiful Isle," were sung by Mrs. A.F. DeCastro and Mrs. Emerson Bonner, accompanied at the chapel organ by Mrs. J.P. Watson.

Mrs. Deuel's two grandsons, Virgil and Lavern Garretson, and her four grandsons-in-law, Kenneth Riley, Pete A. Owens, John Schmid and Wendell Davis, acted as casketbearers. The latter substituted for Charles Bancroft who was unable to attend.

Interment was in the Lusk cemetery and Mr. Deuel's body will be moved from the Kirtley cemetery and placed beside his wife when the weather permits in the spring.

Out-of-town relatives here for the funeral services were Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Garretson, Mr. and Mrs. Lavern Garretson, Mrs. Vern Knowles, Mr. and Mrs. Leo Deuel, Mr. and Mrs. E. Floyd Deuel, Mr. and Mrs. John Schmid, Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Davis and Virginia, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Davis, and Mrs. John Davis. The Davis families are all from Harrison.
