Everett "Red" Bird Dies in Denver Thursday

Everett Bird, 73, of the Red Bird community of Niobrara County, died Thursday, June 18, in a Denver hospital. He had a stroke March 10, and since that time has been hospitalized most of the time.

Graveside services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Crown Hill Cemetery in Denver. Robert L. West, Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints officiated, followed by services of the Memorial Lodge No. 1, A.F.&A.M. , as a courtesy to Mount View Lodge No. 161, A.F.&A.M., Edgemont, S.D. to which he belonged.

Casket bearers were James Meng of Lusk, Frank Bergeson, Dean Holland, Bud Jacobs, Richard David and Harold Eyrich.

Mr. Bird, known as "Red" to his friends, was born at Pittsburg, Kans., April 28, 1897. He schooled in Kansas until the age of 13. Following the death of his mother, the family moved to Walsenburg, Colo., area.

In 1917 he joined the Navy and served two years in World War I. He came to Edgemont, S. D., in 1919, and in 1920 filed on a homestead on Lance Creek.

June 14, 1924 he married Berniece Brown at Casper. He worked in the oil fields until 1932 when the couple settled at Red Bird and opened and operated a store and gas station. He closed the store seven years ago.

Survivors include his widow Berniece of the family home; one brother, Glenn of Washington D.C. and a sister, Juanila Mallehan of Indio, Calif.

His parents and a brother, Carl died previously.
