Conrad Larsen, Passes Away in sleep at Hansen Home; Military Rites Are Accorded at Final Services Wednesday

Concluding rites were conducted at two o'clock Wednesday afternoon for the late Conrad Larsen, from the chapel of the Peet Funeral Home, with Rev. Frank Schweissing, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lusk, officiating.

During the services Mesdames A. F. DeCastro and Emerson Bonner sang as duets, "Nearer My God to Thee," and "Beyond The Sunset" with Mrs. H. J. Templeton presiding at the organ.

Interment was made in the Lusk cemetery, where Military rites were accorded by members of the Weiten-Dupes Post No. 4, American Legion and Niobrara Post No. 3511, Veterans of Foreign Wars. The firing squad for the salute was provided by the local National Guard. Bearing the remains to their last resting place were Charles Heumier, Henry P. Klemke, John Alter, Bunt Alter, Gerhard Vick and Chester Flick.

Conrad Larsen was born May 13th, 1890 at Fiekkefjord, Norway, the son of Lars and Jensine Bakkem. Here he grew to manhood receiving his education and spiritual training in the Lutheran church.

In the spring of 1909, he left his home in Norway and Journeyed to Chadron, Nebr., where he remained but a few months and came westward to Lusk, Wyo., where he was employed in the Northwestern Hotel. In 1913, he homesteaded in the Peaceful Valley community, six miles northwest of Lusk.

Upon the entrance of the United States in World War I, he enlisted on July 19, 1919 at the age of 28 years, and received his basic training in Tex. He saw active service in France as a private with Company E of the 23rd Infantry American Expeditionary Forces. Upon the declaration of the Armistice, November 11, 1918, he served with the occupation forces in the Rhineland of Germany .The following summer he returned to the United States and was discharged from Fort D. A. Russell, Wyoming (now known as Fort Francis E. Warren), on August 16th, 1919.

Returning to his homestead, he perused his occupation as a farmer with thrift and good citizenship. Following the second World War, he visited his native land, Norway, for 22 months returning home February 28th of this year.

The deceased had experienced a brief illness from Monday through Wednesday of last week, and on Thursday seemingly was feeling his usual self and visited with friends around town. He passed quietly away in his sleep Thursday evening, September 27th at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Anthon Hansen, with whom he had been making his home. His demise was not discovered until the following morning. He had attained the age of 61 years, 4 months and 16 days.

He leaves to mourn his passing three brothers, Hans Larsen of Chicago, Ill.; Leander Larsen of Eureka, Calif. Alfred Bakkem of Norway; two sisters, Mrs. Syverine Nelson and Miss Amelia Bakkem of Norway; two cousins, Mrs. Gertrude Hansen and Mrs. Peter Paul Brown both of Lusk, Wyo. and many friends who will miss his familiar face.

Conrad Larsen Dies In Lusk Thursday

Death came quietly to Conrad Larsen, 61, as he slept at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Anthon Hansen, either Thursday night or early Friday morning.

He had suffered for some time from a heart condition and the discovery of his passing was made by Mr. Hansen when he went to Mr. Larsen's room when he failed to come to breakfast Friday morning, Sept. 28.

Born in Norway, May 12, 1890, he came to America in 1909 at the age of 19 years. He came directly to Chadron, Nebr., where a cousin, Gertrude Larsen (now Mrs. Anthon Hansen) was working and he also secured employment there.

Later they both came to Lusk where they were employed at the Northwestern Hotel which was owned by their aunt, Mrs. Lena Henry.

Conrad Larsen took up a homestead six miles northwest of Lusk where he lived until entering the U. S. Army in World War I. He then served three years in the service, remaining in Germany one year after the War was over.

Returning to the United States he again leased his ranch and took a trip back to his old home in Norway, where he stayed for several months. After his return home he entered the University of Wyoming where he studied for a time and then went back to his place where he lived until last year when he again rented it and took another trip to Norway where he remained until the end of February of this year.

Since his return he has made his home with his cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Anthon Hansen.

Funeral services were held from the Peet Chapel Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Frank Schweissing, pastor of the Baptist Church, officiating.

Military services were conducted at the grave by members of Wieten-Dupes Post No. 4, American Legion.

The casket bearers were Bunt Alter, Gerhart Wick, John Alter, Chas. E. Heumier, Helmuth Klemke and Chester Flick.

A brother, Hans Larsen of Chicago, arrived in Lusk the first of the week and another brother, Leander Larsen, resides at Ukiah, Calif. He is also survived by two brothers and two sisters in Norway, and Mrs. Anthon Hansen and Mrs. P. P. Brown of Lusk are cousins.
