Mrs. Leah Kuns Dies After Long Period of Illness

Thon Book No. 9

Fighting a losing battle for life which lasted more than a year, Mrs. Leah Jane Kuns, wife of George Kuns of this city, passed away at the Lusk hospital at 4:00 p.m. last Thursday, August 1st, her death attributed to a brain tumor and other complications. Mrs. Kuns was 39 years, 11 months and 8 days of age at the time she was claimed.

Funeral services were conducted from the chapel of the Peet Funeral home at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon, August 4th, Rev. Millard H. Marshall, pastor of the Congregational church of this city officiating. Many of her wide circle of acquaintances, attesting the esteem in which she was held in life, paid final respects to this popular young woman at the services and banks of floral tributes adorned the area surrounding the casket.

During the chapel service, Mrs. Cecil Stark and Mrs. Joe Danaher sang "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "Abide With Me." A vocal solo, "Sweet Hour of Prayer," was sung by Mrs. H. J. Templeton, Mrs. Otto Koekerlin accompanied all selections.

The remains of Mrs. Kuns were laid at rest in the Lusk cemetery, borne to their last resting place by Cecil Stark, Thomas O. Miller, C.P. Owens, Joe Danaher, Glen L. Cates and C.E. Marvin. A brief graveside service was conducted by Rev. Marshall.

Mrs. Kuns was taken ill during the spring of 1939, and in June was taken to Rochester, Minn., where two major operations were performed in the Mayo Brothers hospital. Returning home, Mrs. Kuns rallied for a time, but in February of this year she again submitted to surgical treatment in the local hospital. Her condition from that time had been varied, and a little more than a month ago, she again entered the hospital for treatment. The tumor is believed to have developed early in the year, and since that time her condition gradually grew worse, although everything medical science could offer was provided for her.

Because of her ever-present cheerful attitude and charming personality, Mrs. Kuns had acquired a wide circle of friends. All of these, along with the relatives are deeply grieved at her passing.

Obituary

Leah Jane McConaughey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac McConaughey, was born at Attica, Iowa, August 4, 1900. (Note: This date is as published. August 24 was used in this database, based on the gravestone and the calculations of length of life in previous article.) She resided there with her parents until she was 14 years of age when she with her parents moved to Lambertson, Minnesota. She attended high school at Lambertson and took an active part in many social and church activities, especially in singing. While in Lambertson she made many friends.

Her parents moved to Lusk in 1919 and Miss Leah made her home with a sister at Des Moines, Iowa. While living there she met her husband, George Kuns and they were married there July 9, 1928. They resided in Des Moines until August, 1929, when they came to make their home in Lusk. Throughout the last year of her life when health failed her she remained cheerful and was always glad to meet her many friends, and the many kind words of sympathy attest the high esteem and love in which she was held by her many friends. Until her illness she had been employed at the Golden Rule store in Lusk and in that capacity made hundreds of friends throughout the community.

She leaves to mourn her passing, her husband, George D. Kuns; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac McConaughey; three brothers, Joseph of Lusk; Paul of Sheridan, Wyo.; and Ted of Borger, Texas; and one sister, Mrs. Kate Clark of Sandy, Oregon.

Out of town relatives attending the funeral were her brothers and sister, an uncle, Nelson McConaughey of Hay Springs, Nebr., two cousins, Alex Mart and sister, of Hay Springs; Mrs. Ada McConaughey of Lambertson, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Jack Kuns of Clear Lake, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. A.R. Kuhns of Forest City, Iowa.
