Thon Book No. 9

Friends here were deeply grieved this week when word reached here telling of the passing of Virgil E. "Jack" Jackson, for many years one of the most lovable characters of this locality. Mr. Jackson died at 4:30 P.M. June 21st at the home of a niece in Glasgow, Ky. following a prolonged illness caused by high blood pressure and an affliction of the heart.

He left here in March, hoping that the lower climate would prove a benefit to his health, but was confined to bed immediately upon arrival in Kentucky and remained there until his death.

Surviving are one son, Hilliard of Lander and two grandchildren, Arlene and Bobby Jackson of Lander. His wife preceded him in death passing away in this city on November 16th, 1938. Another son Harry, met accidental death about eight or nine years ago it is understood.

Funeral services were to have been held today (Thursday) at Scottsville, Ky., and burial will be alongside the grave of Mrs. Jackson.

Mr. Jackson is believed to have come to Wyoming in 1916 at the time when oil field discoveries were bringing hundreds of persons here from all parts of the country. He was employed for several years by one of the major oil companies and it was when the boom here was at its peak in 1918 that he purchased a restaurant business in this city. This he operated for many years although he closed his establishment each summer in order to rest up. He always enjoyed a fine patronage and during the time he operated the cafe he acquired a host of friends and admirers, most all of whom referred to and addressed hime as just "Jack".

Mr. Jackson had reached his 76th anniversary on March 22nd this year, and two days later left for Kentucky. He had only a week or so ago made arrangements with Clarence Sides of Kirtley to come and get him so that he might enjoy Wyoming's healthful climate this summer, but the death message arrived only a day or two before Sides planned to leave.
