Floyd "Cody" Milton Clark
Floyd "Cody" Clark, Well Known Here, Dies in Alliance Hospital
Floyd Martin Clark, better known to many friends in this vicinity as "Cody" Clark, passed away early last Saturday morning at St. Joseph's hospital at Alliance, Nebr. Death was due to a complication of diseases. Mr. Clark was 49 years of age.
Although his health had been poor for some time past, Mr. Clark did not become seriously ill until about three weeks prior to his demise. He was immediately taken to Alliance for treatment, but his condition was such that recovery was doubtful from the time he became confined there.
Surviving are his widow and three children, Mary Ellen, Ruth and Allan, of Hill City, S.Dak., his parents, Mrs. and Mrs. D. J. Clark and one sister, Mrs. Edna Metzger, of north of Hat Creek.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at Newcastle, and burial was made in the Newcastle cemetery. The esteem in which Mr. Clark was held was attested by the many friends from near and far, in attendance at the last rites.
Floyd Martin Clark was born in Wisconsin in 1882, and in 1884 moved with his family to Hay Springs, Nebr. He attended the Chadron schools, graduating from the high school in that city. He then attended the University of Wisconsin, graduating with honors. While in college he became prominent in athletics and starred on the university football team. He next achieved the distinction of being selected on the American All-Star football team. Following this, he coached football in prominent schools of Nebraska, and also attained considerable standing in professional baseball.
In 1910 he was married to Miss Mildred Hayte at Crete, Nebr., moving to the Hat Creek country several years later to take up ranching.
While at this occupation, Mr. Clark became interested in the development of Wyoming oil fields and devoted much of his time to this work during the past fifteen years. When taken ill, he had been drilling a well in the Osage field, and it is understood that a successful strike was made the day before his death.
Mr. Clark was a candidate for sheriff of Niobrara County in the election of 1922, but was unsuccessful.
He was a man of high ideals, good morals, always had a smile for everyone, and was untiring in all things he undertook to do. With success in his endeavors defeated only by death, it is to say the least that his demise is sad and untimely. The sympathy of many friends in this community goes to those who are bereaved in his passing.
Note: In his wife's obituary, the Social Security Index, and the Lusk Cemetery records, Floyd's middle name is Milton.
