Marguerite Fietz dies

Marguerite Fietz, 69, long-time teacher in Lusk schools, died Jan. 24 at the Niobrara Memorial Hospital.

The Rev. Ron Marshall officiated at the service held at the Peet Mortuary Chapel Saturday, Jan. 27, at 2:00 p.m. Kay Smith and Rick Kilmer, accompanied by Edna DeCastro, sang, "Nearer My God to Thee" and "Beyond The Sunset".

Pallbearers were Venus Kilmer, Ray Jenkins, Dale Leimser, L.T. Bonner, Johnny Thon and Jerry Oestman. Interment was in the Lusk cemetery. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or to the Niobrara Memorial Hospital.

Marguerite Lucille Germann was born July 12, 1909, near Lucerne, Switzerland. She came to this country when she was just ten months old with her mother and father Gottfried and Elise Germann.

In 1912 the family homesteaded northeast of Node, where in 1915 Marguerite started attending a rural school nearby. After graduating from Harrison High School she began a 32 year teaching career by teaching in one of the many country schools that dotted the prairie in 1926.

In 1936 she married Albert Fietz. During the next seven years they had had three daugthers, Alberta, Janice, and Edith. She started teaching again in 1948 and enrolled in Chadron State Teachers College where she obtained her degree in elementary education.

Although most of her teaching years were spent at the Lusk Grade School, some of the other schools where she taught were Sunnyside, West Kirtley, Van Tassell, Flat Top, Moore Springs, Jay Em and Shawnee.

She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Lusk and the Retired Teachers Association.

She is survived by her brother Pete Germann of Node; three daughters Alberta McCallister of Baxter Springs, Kan., Janice Hales of Lusk, and Edith Brewer of Cheyenne; and six grandchildren.
