John W. Burkhart Passes Away Friday At Daughter's Home

John William Burkhart, former resident of this county for a number of years, and who had made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Jessie Siemsen and family of near Van Tassell for the past year, succumbed last Friday, September 11th after a lingering illness, at the age of 72 years, 1 month and 11 days.

Mr. Burkhart was a native of Kentucky and spent most of his younger life there. Later he moved to Illinois, where in November, 1886 he was married to Miss Cora Bell Scott at Hindsboro. To this union seven children were born, four of whom survive. Mrs. Burkhart passed away in 1924 at Sommerville, Mo., where they had gone from Wyoming in 1920, on account of her failing health.

Funeral services under the direction of George Earl Peet were held from the First Baptist church Sunday afternoon, Rev. B. F. Farrar, pastor, officiating. The remains were then conveyed to Douglas where final rites were held, Rev. Methvith, pastor of the Douglas Methodist church, officiating. Interment was made in the Douglas cemetery. John William Burkhart was born in Pulaski County, Kentucky, August 1st, 1859, and passed away September 11th, 1931. Thus he attained the age of 72 years, 1 month and 11 days.

The closing days of his earthly life were spent at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Siemsen. This was his old home that he homesteaded 22 years ago and is located 9 miles northwest of Van Tassell.

In 1920, on account of the failing health of his wife, they moved to Summerville, Mo., where seven years ago his wife passed to the Great Beyond. He continued to reside there until September 1st, 1930, when he returned to Wyoming and made his home with his daughter.

On November 18th, 1886, he was united in marriage to Miss Cora Bell Scott, at Hindsburo, Ill., and to this union seven children were born, three of whom died in infancy.

There remain to mourn his departure, his four daughters: Mrs. Pearl Vandine, of Douglas, Wyoming; Mrs. Jessie Siemsen, Van Tassell, Wyo.; Mrs. Ethel Warnock, Lusk, Wyo.; and Mrs. Eva Marts, Harrison, Nebr. Besides the above, eight grandchildren and one brother, of Elnora, Ind., survive.

Morn not the dead, who calmly be
  By God's own hand composed to rest;
For hark! A voice from yonder sky
  Proclaims them blest, supremely blest.
With them the toil and strife are o're,
  Their labors end, their sorrows cease;
For they have gained the blissful shore
  Where dwells serene, Eternal Peace.

Funeral services were held from the Baptist church of this city under the direction of George Earl Peet, mortician. Rev. B. F. Farrar, pastor of the First Baptist church, preached the sermon from the text, Mark 4:35. Interment was had at Douglas, where Rev. Methvith, pastor of the Douglas Methodist church, officiated.

The pall bearers were William Vandine, John Siemsen, John Warnock, and Dwight Marts, sons-in-law, and two grandsons, Richard and Bernard Vandine.

The singers were William Sherk, Mrs. B. F. Farrar, Miss Bessie Lumsden and Mrs. Harriet Smith, sopranos; Mrs. Edna DeCastro and Mrs. Ella Ellis, altos, Mr. J. W. Higgins, bass. The songs were "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," "The Old Rugged Cross," "Rock of Ages," and Mr. Sherk sang "Just as I Am" as a solo.
