L. C. Burkholder Fatally Injured North of Casper

An automobile accident on the Salt Creek highway early Sunday morning, about 17 miles north of Casper, was the cause of the second violent death to be felt in this city within two days, when Lewis Clyde Burkholder, whose family resides in this city, and whose son, W. Harold Burkholder, is county treasurer of Niobrara County, was fatally injured when the car in which he was a passenger with four other men, left the highway and turned over. The other occupants were uninjured.

According to information received here, it is believed that the steering gear broke, causing the car to become uncontrollable. T. Matellas was driving at the time of the accident.

Mr. Burkholder was rushed to the Natrona Memorial hospital at Casper as soon as possible, but he succumbed to his injuries at 5:15 a.m. without regaining consciousness. He had suffered a skull fracture and internal injuries. The remains were placed in charge of the Muck funeral home, and later sent to this city for burial.

Mr. Burkholder was born near Richmond, Iowa, September 17, 1879, and at the time of his death was 51 years, 9 months and 27 days of age. For a number of years, he with his family resided on a farm near Keeline. They moved to Lusk several years ago where the widow and children now reside. Mr. Burkholder had been engaged as a ditch contractor in the Salt Creek oil field for some time, with headquarters at Edgerton.

Funeral services were held from the Lusk Congregational church Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with Rev. Edwin F. Irwin, pastor, officiating. Arrangements were under direction of the Peet mortuary. The male quartet of the Congregational church rendered music during the church service. Burial took place in the Lusk cemetery, the body being borne to its final resting place by Will Hassed, N. E. Hartwell, Jack Gartrell, R. B. Minter, O. P. Harnagel and Fred Hansen.

Mr. Burkholder is survived by his widow, five sons, Harold, of Lusk, Merl of Laramie; Ervin of Hutchinson, Kan., Richard and Neal of Lusk, and seven daughters; Evelyn, Irene, Maxine, Bernetta, Dorothy and Neva, all of whom live in this city.

C. W. Barr and Miss Melva Barr, brother and sister of Mrs. Burkholder, were here to attend the funeral services. A number of Mr. Burkholder's friends from Edgerton and Midwest also were present at the funeral.
