Long-time Van Tassell resident dies March 10

Elsie West, a long time resident of the Van Tassell area, died at the Community Hospital in Torrington March 10, following a lengthy illness. Funeral service for Mrs. West, 89, was held at Peet Mortuary Chapel Monday, March 14.

Elsie Bell Turner West was born at Snyder, Mo., Chariton County, September 5, 1893, the eldest child of Jane Bell Rickett and John Turner. She attended school at Hog Ridge, Mo., and after her mother died when she was young, Elsie assumed responsibility for the care of her younger brother and sister.

On August 14, 1911, Elsie Turner and Victor C. West were married at Summer, Mo. They moved to Wyoming May 21, 1915, settling in Van Tassell where they made their permanent home. The Wests were the parents of five children, Loeta, John Roy, Clarence, Ruby and Frank.

The Rev, Frank Blish officiated at the memorial service. Minerva Watson was organist and Mark Lohr, soloist sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beyond The Sunset." Active pallbearers were Robert Solick, John West, Bud Buckley, Ed Peterson, Bill Helgoth and Dennis Brott. Interment was in Lusk Cemetery.

Mrs. West is survived by sons Clarence of Van Tassell and Frank of Whitney, Neb., daughters Ruby Brott, Crawford and Leota Solick, Lincoln, Neb.; two daughters-in-law Dorothy West, Crawford and Gertrude West, Harrison; 15 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Victor; one son, John Roy; her parents, one brother and two sisters.
