Zeb Ward long-time Niobraran dies in Manville

Funeral service was held Monday at 2:00 at the Peet Chapel for Zeb Ward, 78, long-time Niobrara County resident and civic leader of Manville for many years. Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mr. Ward died Thursday at his home in Manville.

A. C. Frye, Manville, Martin Kelly, Torrington and Laird Johnson, Lusk conducted the funeral service. Mrs. Judson Watson was the organist and Mrs. John Overman and Mrs. Bud Ellis sang "Sweet Hour of Prayer" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again."

Honorary pallbearers were Roscoe Ross, Guy Baker, Ted Schmidt, Buster Penfield, Joe O'Brien, Julius Peterson, Bill Poff, Fred Sheaman, Marion Rasmussen, Floyd Baughman, Charles Vaughan, Judson Watson, John Alter and Rollie Sadler.

Casket bearers were six grandsons, Alfred C. Ward, Wade W. Ward, Criss N. Ward, Manville; George G. Ward, Lance Creek; Robert C. Ward, Tyndall, S. D.; Scott Ward, Powell and two grand-sons-in-law Tom Middleton, Powell and William L. Kumpf, Jr. Manville.

Zeb W. Ward was born Sept. 6, 1896 at Almartha, Mo., the son of George Grant Ward and Susan Ellen Parnell Ward. His father died in 1901 and his mother married Samuel Wagner in 1904.

In 1909 he moved with his family to Sioux County, Neb., where he attended school near Curley. From 1914-1918 he worked at different ranches in various parts of the country.

He came to Wyoming in 1918 and filed on a homestead on Dogie Creek in northern Niobrara County. Then he enlisted and served in World War I, returning to Wyoming and establishing residence in 1919.

April 12, 1922, he married Ruth Hockett at her family home in rural Sioux County. They returned to Wyoming and made their home at the family ranch on Dogie Creek until 1949 when they moved to Manville. Mr. Ward was active in civic affairs of Manville until the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife; two sons Grant Robert Ward, Lance Creek and Fred E. Ward, Lingle; one daughter, May Ellen Smith, Lance Creek; one brother Nolan Ward, Caldwell, Idaho; three sisters, Maude Quinn, Caldwell, Idaho, Christeen Kobbe and Marie Williamson, Redlands, Calif.; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

One daughter, Grace Vera and one son, Charley Claud died previously.

The family has requested that memorials be made to the Cancer Fund.
