Mollie Vondra

Mollie Vondra (Slama), 95, the daughter of Karel and Frances Slama (Zak), was born at Ulysses, Nebr. on Jan 18, 1910. Mollie was one of seven children, who all preceded her in death.

Shortly after her seventeenth birthday, Mollie met and married Otto Vondra, on Sept. 27, 1927, in Seward, Nebr. To this union, four children were born; Arline, Betty, Don and Shirley. Mollie and Otto started married life in Nebraska on her parents' farm. They then moved to Casper and lived with Otto's parents. They spent each winter in Casper. However in 1934, Mollie and Otto made their home on the ranch located 20 miles south of Lusk. There was no running water or electricity. Mollie remodeled most of the ranch house on her own. She would laugh at the hard times when learning to rewire the electricity. They raised their family and their two grandchildren, Crystal and Randy Sides on the ranch until 1970.

In 1970, they moved into Lusk, where Mollie worked for McKnight Bakery, Montgomery Ward, The Diner, and did housework and sewing for many of the locals. Mollie was very active with the local Senior Center of Lusk. Mollie was a member of the Garden Club, the Royal Valley Club, and the Congregational Church. She was appointed to the Silver Haired Legislature. Mollie and Otto moved to the Ranger Apartments in 1988.

Otto passed away in March 1989. Mollie continued living at the Ranger Apartments. Mollie had many good memories and enjoyed many fun activities with all the other wonderful people who resided at the Ranger. Mollie was especially proud of her 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Her life centered around her family. Mollie lived a very long and happy life. She loved her family and leaves them with this motto for life, "Sing a lot, cuss a lot, cry a lot and pray a lot." Like I say! Good-bye my dear family when you remember me, know how much I loved you all.

Survivors include her children, Arline Clausen, Betty Durnen both of Casper, Shirley Downs of Lander, granddaughter Crystal Fleming of Lakewood, Colo., and grandson Randy Sides of Casper. Her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her beloved husband Otto, she was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, brothers, and her son Donald Vondra.
Memorial Services will be Feb. 19, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Congregational Church in Lusk. Memorials may be made to the Congregational Church and the Senior Center of Lusk. Cicmanec Pier Funeral Home in Lusk is in charge of arrangements.
