Claude A. Updike
Funeral services for retired missionary Claude A. Updike of Beaverton, OR were held recently. Mr. Updike died in a Portland area hospital. He was 77.
Born in Lusk, his parents, Charles and Hattie Updike, homesteaded on Indian Creek in 1909. He was a 1931 graduate of Lusk High School and was a minister for 43 years.
He served as missionary in Central America for 22 years and as a missionary representative for eight years. He was a pastor in various parts of the United States for 13 years, former Newcastle resident and manager of Red Owl in Newcastle when it opened, and later worked in the oil field before moving to the Portland area in 1987.
He is survived by his wife, Lola; one son, Chuck of Beaverton; one daughter, Claudette Manny of Winterset, IA; one brother, Lester of Osage; one sister, Dorothy Davis of CA; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Concluding services were in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale, CA.
