Charlie Umphenour dies at Chadron after a long illness

Charlie N. Umphenour, 71, died early Saturday morning at the Chadron Hospital after a long fight with a heart ailment. The funeral service was held at Memorial United Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Wayne Tieszen officiating, and burial was in the Harrison Cemetery.

Mr. Umphenour was a man that had rendered many services to the community of which he was a native. He was a veteran of World War II serving from Jan. 1943 to Sept. 1945 in England, Germany and France. He was Sioux County sheriff two years, was Harrison postmaster three years and county judge for 23 years.

As a member of the Methodist Church he had been a Sunday School teacher and a member of the church board. He had been a school board member, scoutmaster, and active member of the Harrison post of Veterans of Foreign Wars. For many years he had faithfully taken the responsibility in many other community endeavors. He was an avid sportsman and gun collector.

He was born Nov. 4, 1906, he married Mabel York, and they had two children.

Surviving are his widow Mabel, one daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Pamela) Haworth of Harrison; two granddaughters, Melisa and Rebecca Haworth; one sister, Janice Grote of Lingle, Wyo. His parents and one son preceded him in death.
