Gertrude Burke died last Friday at her Lusk home at the age of 92.
Mrs. Burke has been a town resident since 1976 when she moved here with her daughter, Mary L. Burke.
A native of Wichita, Kan., Gertrude was the daughter of Andrew and Mary Ann McMahan.
When she was 3, the family moved to Liberal, Mo., where Gertrude attended school. There she obtained a teaching certificate and taught country school for a year.
She worked in the post office until she joined the staff of the Bank of Liberal, where she worked for 17 years.
Then she started her own business selling real estate and insurance and also became associated with the Berkey funeral business, where she worked until retirement in 1960.
At that time, Mrs. Burke went to California to live with her daughter, Mary, and they remained in California until moving here.
Gertrude married Clay L. Burke in 1909 and he died in 1913.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Chico, Calif., and the Missouri Real Estate Board.
Mrs. Burke is survived by her daughter, Mary, also of Lusk, and a son, Clinton L. Burke of Los Molenos, Calif., two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mark Lohr of the Church of Christ of Lusk officiated at a Monday afternoon ceremony at Peet Mortuary.
Minerva Watson was the organist and Rick Kilmer was the soloist. Songs were "Beyond the Sunset and "In the Garden."
Burial was to follow at Glen Oaks Memorial Park in Chico, Calif.
The family would prefer memorials to the Niobrara County Nursing home.
