Lewis Thompson, Early Cowboy, Dies in Wash.

Funeral services for Lewis W. Thompson, 83, of Spokane, Wash., were held from the Alvin Chapel in Spokane, September 11, at 11:00 a.m. He died September 8 at Spokane.

He was one of ten children born to Torborg Thorson and Thomas L. Thompson, August 8, 1884, near Story City, Iowa. He came west with his parents, brothers, Thomas and Ole and sister, Bertha, in 1887. They settled nine miles northeast of Lusk, and later moved to a place six miles north of Kirtley, known as the Valley Place.

He did the duties of one of the best cowboys, working for Ad Spaugh, Ed Cook and other ranchers.

In 1907 he married Beatrice Carley and lived for a time in Lusk, where he bought the Fred Galbreath's interest in the livery barn.

He and his wife moved to the northwest where he worked as a station agent for a railroad in Ilo, Nezperce and Lewiston, Ida. Here they were the parents of five children.

In 1922, he and his family returned to Lusk and lived on his fathers' ranch, returning later to Spokane.

After the children were grown he moved to Seattle, where he met and married Evelyn Fillmore in 1942. After a few years they returned to Spokane where they made their home and were living at the time of his death.

Survivors are his widow, Evelyn, three sons, Clinton and Dayland of Oakland, Calif.; Ben of Spokane; two daughters, Mrs. Ethel Lewis of Oakland and Mrs. Retha LaFace of Spokane; one brother, Arthur Thompson of Lusk; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Costlow of Colorado Springs, Mrs. Ethel Taylor of Lusk; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

His parents, three brothers, one half-brother, four sisters and a granddaughter died previously.
