Everette S. Thomas

Everette S. (Everett) Thomas, 83, died Sept. 2, 1996. Services were Sept. 6 at Methodist Church in Harrison, Neb., with the Rev. Tim Pratt officiating. He was buried in Harrison Cemetery.

He was born July 10, 1913, in Edgemont, S. D., the second child of Ira Dallas and Christina (Peterson) Thomas.

He spent his childhood on the family homestead located on Old Woman Creek in eastern Wyoming.

In 1933, he married Grace Dorothy Martin. They lived near Lance Creek until 1945 when they moved to the ranch in northwestern Sioux County that was homesteaded by his grandfather, Samuel.

For more than 50 years, until her death in 1987, she worked beside him as his partner.

They developed one of the area's top cattle herds, conserved, improved and expanded the original homestead, and invited every wild animal in the area to enjoy their hospitality.

They also developed an outstanding herd of Quarter Horses.

An avid horseman, he was very proud of his horse herd.

Throughout his lifetime, one of his greatest pleasures was checking on the new colts that yearly dotted the land at the foot of Coliseum Butte.

He was a rancher who loved the land and the people who were part of it.

In a changing world, he remained the epitome of a gentle cowboy who walked easily beside the Man, who has now called him home.

Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law Ralph and Helen Thomas of Red Lodge, Mont.; sisters Irene Conrad of Edgemont, S.D., and Ruth Montgomery of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; sister-in-law Helen Thomas; brother-in-law Hank Montgomery, one nephew; and five nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a brother in his heart, Ollie Seaman.
