Father of John T. Thode Succumbs To Long Illness In S.D.

John T. Thode, local mechanic, received word a week ago Monday evening, telling of the critical condition of his father, E. W. Thode, at Belvidere, S. Dak., and shortly after, left for the place accompanied by Mrs. Thode. However, they failed to reach the bedside of the sick parent before death had taken him.

The deceased has been a sufferer of cancer for several years and a number of times during the past year, his condition became critical, and the family was called. He was 64 years, 11 months and 2 days of age at the time of death.

Mr. Thode was a native of Itchoe, Germany, born on November 17, 1866. At the age of two years, his family migrated to the United States and settled near Omaha. Ten years later they moved to Carbon, Wyo., where they lived until 1893, operating a large ranch. That year, Mr. Thode trailed a large herd of livestock from the home ranch to the place near Belvidere, where he has since lived. The herd consisted of about 1,000 head of cattle and 500 head of horses. The trail started in the Shirley Basin, to the south of Casper, and followed a course thru LaPrelle creek to Douglas, where they crossed the river, then continuing to Lost Springs. The caravan camped one night near this city, on the place known as the Pax Irvine ranch, after which they then went on to Chadron and north of there across the reservation to the present place.

The deceased is survived by his wife, four sons and five daughters, two brothers and one sister, also two grandchildren, the latter of this city.

Mr. Thode was active in civic and political life and had held several public offices in Wyoming and South Dakota. He was one of Belvidere's first merchants, and during his residence there made a large host of friends, to whom his passing will be a great loss.

He was a member of Mt. Moriah Lodge A.F. & A.M. and of Joppa Chapter R.A.M. at Kodaka and of Brule Commandery Knights Templar at Chamberlain and of Naja Temple Mystic Shrine at Deadwood and of the Modern Woodmen at Belvidere, and had always been an active worker in all of these organizations.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Wednesday afternoon, October 21st, conducted by Rev. Elwood, pastor. Immediately following the church services, the Masonic funeral services were held by Mt. Moriah Lodge, conducted by A. G. Granger, with burial in the Belvidere cemetery.
