Leon Baker, Former Niobrara County Resident Dies at Powell, Wyo. Funeral Services Held Here This Afternoon

Leon Baker, 85, former resident of The Van Tassell community passed away at 11:30 o'clock Sunday November 14th, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Kindler, who reside on a ranch southwest of Powell, Wyo. He had suffered a stroke in 1952 and since made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Kindler.

Funeral services were conducted at two o'clock this (Thursday) afternoon, November 18th, from the chapel of the Peet Mortuary, with Rev. Jacob Nein, pastor of the First Congregational Church of Lusk officiating.

During the rites, Mrs. Emerson Bonner and Mrs. A. F. DeCastro sang two selections, "Beyond the Sunset" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" with Mrs. J. P. Watson accompanying at the organ.

Interment was made in the Lusk cemetery with John Burke, Donald Burke, James E. Roberts, C. E. Marvin, Earle Hales and Lee Moore acting as casketbearers.

Leon Baker, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Baker was born January 16th, 1869 at Spring Bluffs, Wisconsin, and departed from this life November 14th, 1954 at Powell, Wyo. He was 85 years, nine months and 29 days of age.

He spent his early boyhood at Spring Bluffs until the family moved to Genoa, Minnesota when he was twelve years old. Here he was reared to manhood and on May 11, 1898 was united in marriage to Viola Elizabeth Lapham.

The family moved to the community of Van Tassell, Wyoming in 1925. It was here that Mrs. Baker passed away in 1926. Mr. Baker continued to make his home in Van Tassell and Lusk until moving to Powell, Wyo. in 1944. The deceased favorite pastimes were reading and going fishing in the streams of the Powell area. He was very proud of the fact that he at one time had ten grandsons serving in the armed forces of this country. There are at the present time nine grandsons in military service.

He was preceded in death by his wife and three children, an infant daughter in 1900, a son, Archie of Chicago, Il. in 1923, and a son, Ray of Wichita, Kansas who passed away on October 5th 1954.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. A. F. Kindler of Powell, Wyo., Mrs. S. G. Farnsworth of Burlington, Colo., and Mrs. R. O. Fenner of Chatteroy, Wash., one son, Glenn Baker of Long Yake Minn.; one brother, Bert Baker, and a sister, Mrs. Ella Town, of Rochester, Minn., 26 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Leon Baker Dies in Powell Sunday

Leon Baker, a former resident of Van Tassell and of Lusk, died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. E. Kindler, in Powell. He had been ill a long time.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Peet Chapel with Rev. Jacob Nein officiating. Mrs. Emerson Bonner and Mrs. A. F. DeCastro will sing "Beyond the Sunset" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere." accompanied by Mrs. J. P. Watson at the organ.

Pallbearers will be: John Burke, Donald Burke, Jimmy Roberts, Lee Moore, C. E. Marvin and Earl Hales. Interment will be in the Lusk cemetery with the Peet Mortuary in charge.

Mr. Baker is the grandfather of S/Sgt. Wm. E. Baker, Pfc. Harold Baker and Pfc. Loyd E. Baker, all of Lusk, He lived at various times in Van Tassell, Powell and Lusk, returning to Powell six years ago to make his home with his daughter.

Last Rites Held For Leon Baker

Funeral services were held Nov. 18 at 2:00 in the Peet Chapel for Leon Baker, 85, who died Nov. 14 at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A. E. Kindler in Powell.

Rev. Jacob Nein officiated at the service. Mrs. Emerson Bonner and Mrs. A. F. DeCastro sang "Beyond the Sunset" and "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere," accompanied by Mrs. J. P. Watson, organist.

Pallbearers were: John Burke, donald Burke, Jimmy Roberts, Lee Moore, C. E. Marvin and Earl Hales. Interment was in the Lusk cemetery with the Peet mortuary in charge.

Leon Baker, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Baker, was born Jan. 19, 1869 at Spring Bluffs, Wis. There he spent his early boyhood until the family moved to Genos, Minn., when he was 12 years old. He was married to Miss Viola Elizabeth Lapham May 11, 1898.

The family moved to Van Tassell in 1925. It was here that Mrs. Baker died in 1926. Mr. Baker continued to make his home in the Van Tassell and Lusk communities until moving to Powell in 1944. Three children previously died: an infant daughter in 1900, a son, Archie, of Chicago in 1923, and a son, Ray, of Wichita, Kans., who died Oct. 5, 1954.

Survivors include three daughters: Mrs. A. E. Kindler of Powell; Mrs. S. G. Farnsworth of Burlington, Colo.; Mrs. R. O. Fenner of Chatterby, Wash.; a son, Glenn, of Long Lake, Minn.; 26 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. At one time Mr. Baker had 10 grandsons serving in the armed forces; at present there are nine. Besides the above, a brother and a sister survive: Bert Baker and Mrs. Ella Town, both living near Rochester, Minn.
