Clarence (Tuffy) Swope

Clarence Swope, 55, a resident of Canyonville, Ore. for 17 years, died July 13, 1983 at the V.F.W. Hospital in Roseburg, Ore.

He was born to John and Minnie Swope in Harrison, Nebr., May 21, 1928. When he was 10 days old, he and his mother joined the family on the ranch in the Indian Community at Whitman, where he worked with his father ranching and breaking horses. He jockeyed race horses during the 1940's for Connie Jordan and worked heavy equipment for his sister and brother-in-law until 1963, when he and his family move to Oregon. He operated heavy equipment and broke horses until 1979, when ill health caused him to retire.

He was a member of the Umpiqua V.F.W. Post #4336 in Canyonville, Ore.

He is survived by his wife, Eula; three sons, Eddie, Pat and Jack; one daughter, Mary Ann Billingsely, granddaughter and a grandson all of Canyonville, Ore.; a sister, Alice Hales of Lusk and two nieces Wahnita McCoy of Torrington and Dora Lee McCrary of Titusville, Fla., many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, mother, one sister, Edith June and one niece.

Private cremation was at the Blackmore Crematory. The ashes will be put in the Crawford, Neb. cemetery.

Memorial services will be Sunday July 24 at Alice Hales' Residence, 235 East 5th St. with a carry-in-dinner. The family requests no flowers. Donations may be made to the V.F.W. Cancer fund.
