John C. Sturman Is Victim of Grim Reaper Monday

Passes Away Suddenly at Ranch Home a Few Miles East of Lusk
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon; burial made in Lusk cemetery.

Greatly shocked and grieved were the residents of Lusk and vicinity when the news circulated that J. C. Sturman had passed away suddenly at his home a few miles east of town, shortly after noon on Monday, February 15, 1926.

Although Mr. Sturman has been suffering from cancer for a number of years, he had been up and around as usual all the forenoon, but after dinner complained of not feeling well and thought he would lie down a while. He passed away in a very short time.

John Calhoun Sturman was born in Missiouri, December 19, 1848, but when five years old moved with his parents to Minnesota.

During the gold rush in the Black Hills in 1876 he followed the crowd. At that time there were only three roads into the hills. They were from Sidney,Nebr., Cheyenne, Wyo., and Pierre, S. Dak., the latter being the route taken by him and the trip was made with an ox freighting outfit.

Mr. Sturman was associated with the early history of this part of Wyoming, coming here in 1881 as a prospector in Muskrat Canyon. A couple of years later he took his preemption on land that joined the ranch that he later homesteaded and on which he made his home ever since. He engaged in the stock-raising industry, which occupation he was still following at the time of his death, and was one of the successful ranchers of Niobrara County.

On April 27, 1893, Mr. Sturman was married to Mary Rebecca Lohr, sister of John Lohr and Mrs. Malter Larson of Lusk. To this union were born nine children, three of whom have preceded their father in death. Their daughter, Ruth died only last August as a result of burns.

Besides his wife the following children survive him; three daughters, Mrs. Virginia Damrow, Emma and Orian, and three son, John, Ben and Kenneth. Three brothers are also living: Charles of Lewiston, Mont., Sam of Spokane, Wash., and Will of Fargo, N.Dak.,also survives.

During the many years that Mr. Sturman lived in this community he had been known as an industrious, thrifty citizen, a kind neighbor and a devoted father, just the kind of man that every country needs to build it up and to his family and his county and state, John Sturman gave his best.

Funeral services were held from the Community church Wednesday, Rev. H.H. Koontz officiating. Internment was made in the Lusk cementery.

The pall bearers, who were all old time friends, were E.M. Arnold, C.A. Barbar, A.L. Miller, H.E. Barns, Fred Root and George Saffell.
