John C. Sturman

John Calhoun Sturman was born April 21, 1903 at the family ranch four miles east of Lusk, the son of John and Mary Lohr Sturman. He died Dec. 9 at Niobrara County Memorial Hospital following a short illness.

Mr. Sturman was educated at Node and Lusk, graduating from Lusk High School in 1922. On May 10, 1946 he was married to Frances Turner in Casper. They operated the family ranch until moving into Lusk in 1974.

John saw the ranch which his father homesteaded in 1883 go from horse and buggy days and horse drawn machinery to mechanized center pivot irrigation. His life was centered around the ranch he loved.

He was a charter member of BPOE 1797 and a past member of the Odd Fellows. An avid sports fan, he especially loved baseball. He had also been a champion horseshoe pitcher in his younger years.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one brother, Mace and four sisters, Kate Damrow, Marjorie Burnaugh, Emma and Ruth Sturman.

Survivors include two brothers, Benjamin of Lusk and Kenneth of Cheyenne; one sister, Orian Conner, Bakersfield, Calif.; one nephew Frank Burnaugh who was raised as a brother, many other nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

Memorial services were conducted at Peet Mortuary Chapel in Lusk Dec. 12, 1983 with the Rev Roy Howell officiating. Music was provided by Phyllis Hahn, organist. Joy Kaltenheuser, soloist, sang "How Great Thou Art" and "The Old Rugged Cross."

Pallbearers were Kenneth Gropp, Henry Wasserburger, Jim Shane, Noal Larson, John Jassman and Ralph Sides.

Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Niobrara County Nursing Home.

Arrangements were by Peet Mortuary.
