Emma Sturman, 77, dies

The funeral for Emma Sturman, 77, was held Wednesday afternoon at the Peet Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Frank Blish officiating.

She died Sunday in Niobrara County Memorial Hospital.

She was a lifelong resident of Niobrara County and spent 47 years teaching in the county schools, mostly in the Lusk Elementary School. She was for many years the principal of Lusk Elementary School. She retired in 1965.

She was born Aug. 3, 1900 at the family ranch east of Lusk to John C. and Mary Sturman, pioneer settlers in the county.

Emma received a degree in education from the University of Wyoming and spent the early years of her teaching career in rural schools. She was known as a strict disciplinarian, dedicated to her profession and to the students she taught. She was especially well known as an outstanding teacher mathematics.

She is survived by one sister, Orion Conner of Bakersfield, Calif., three brothers, John and Ben of Lusk and Kenneth of Cheyenne; and one nephew, Frank Burnaugh of Bakersfield, Calif., raised from childhood by the Sturman family following the death of his mother.

The organist for the funeral was Minerva Watson and Mark Lohr was the soloist. The songs were "How Great thou Art" and "Beyond the Sunset." Pallbearers were Noal Larson, Malter Larson, Ted Lohr, Charles Bruch, Gene Lenz and Robert Templeton. Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Memorials may be sent to the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital or the Niobrara County Nursing Home.
