Samuel Wallace Smyth
Niobrara County native Samuel Wallace Smyth died suddenly at his Baltimore home, Oct. 7.
He spent his early years on the family ranch in north Niobrara County. His father, the late William H. Smyth, was a pioneer homesteader here.
Samuel Smyth served in the Air Force during World War II and was wounded on a mission over Augsburg, Germany.
He was graduated from Charlotte Hall Military Academy in Maryland attended Georgetown University and later was graduated from Denver Art Institute. He gained national recognition for his paintings.
Mr. Smyth operated the family ranch for a number of years before moving to Baltimore, where he was well known and employed in the architectural and engineering fields. He was associated with the Maryland Department of Engineering and Construction at the time of his death.
He sang in the choir at St. Agnes' Catholic Church and was active in Boy Scouts of America, having served as a district commissioner.
He participated in athletics as a student and was an avid sorts fan in later years.
He is survived by his wife, Blanche Bowen, also of Baltimore; a son, Lt. Wallace Smyth of the Marine Corps; his mother, Dorothy Watson Smyth, and his twin sister, Virginia Smyth Abell both of St. Cloud, Fla.
A mass was said at St. Agnes' Church and burial was at Lorraine Park Cemetery in Catonsville, Md.
