Former Station Agent of Lusk Passes Away at Careyhurst Last Friday

Ira E. Smith, former station agent here, passed away Friday, January 16 at his home in Careyhurst, and once again, sorrow has been brought to a large circle of friends in this vicinity. Mr. Smith was a victim of cancer, and death came only to relieve the agony of an affliction of several years duration. He was about 65 years of age.

Mr. Smith had gone to Rochester, Minn., to the Mayo Brothers hospital shortly after the first of the year, and returned home January 9th, after being told that his condition was beyond aid. He had been in poor health for at least two years.

Deceased was employed as operator here for about five years, during one year of which time he also operated a barber shop. He, with his wife left Lusk in the fall of 1927, going to Keeline, where he continued to serve the Chicago & North Western railroad as agent. He remained at this post until early in 1930 when he was transferred to Careyhurst, his home at the time of demise.

Mr. Smith had been employed by the C. & N. W. most of his life, and was located in various parts of Iowa for many years. He had been a member of the Order of Railroad Telegraphers for the past twenty-eight years.

The remains were prepared for shipment and sent to Boone, Ia., where funeral services were held Monday, January 19th. His widow and one son, Ilo Parker survive, and they have the deep sympathy of their many friends this vicinity.
