Services for Thomas Donald Smith, 73, were conducted at 11:00 a.m., Monday May 24, at St John's Lutheran Church, Adair, Iowa by Rev. Don Pritchard. Burial followed at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Audubon County, Iowa.
Mr. Smith died Thursday, May 20 at Veterans Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Mr. Smith was born April 10, 1920 in Estaline, S.D., the son of Charles and Irma Lawson Smith. He grew up and attended schools in South Dakota.
During WWII he served in the Army Air Corps and was stationed in North Africa and Europe. After returning from service he started working as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator.
On August 1, 1947 he married Luella Biegler at Wessington, S.D. They lived several places in South Dakota while working more than 20 years in the Huron, S.D. area. He had lived at his present address in rural Guthrie Center for the past five years. He was baptized into the Lutheran faith in 1963 and was a member of the Wessington, S.D. American Legion for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Luella, one son, Kevin Smith and his wife, Judy of Colwich, Kan.; three daughters, Pamela Hansen of Lusk, Wyo., Valerie Tunink and her husband, Robert of Guthrie Center, and Marcie Knigge and her husband, Dennis of Polk City; grandchildren Terry and Stephanie Smith of Anchorage, Alaska, Christine and Jamee Hansen of Lusk, Wyo., Matthew, Wendy and Brian Tunink of Guthrie Center, Brandi and Doug Knigge of Polk City, and Amanda and Aaron Smith of Colwich, Kan.; step-grandchildren Lisa and David Hansen of Huron, S.D., and Louri and Kerry Nelson of Huron; and one step-great-granddaughter, Racheal Hansen of Huron; one sister Dorothy Schultz and her husband, Glenn of Huron; and by several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one son-in-law, James Hansen; and one granddaughter, Karla Knigge.
Mullen Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
