The day that young Smith met his death, Coach Roy R. Edwards of Northeastern Junior College at Sterling, Colo., had written and mailed the following letter to the youth's parents. The letter was received last Thursday by Mr. and Mrs. Albert Smith.

December 14, 1955
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Smith:

First, I would like to introduce myself. I am Roy Edwards, athletic director and basketball coach at Northeastern Junior College. I have had, and am now enjoying the privilege of working with your son, George, in basketball, as well as knowing your son for the past four months in classrooms and around the campus. Your son has just finished his first quarter college examinations and I am pleased to tell you that his academic progress is satisfactory. Our athletic department policy is one which stresses that a boy receives a full academic education, together with his social and athletic development. It is my pleasure to inform you that George has fulfilled these three requirements satisfactorily.

I might also add that he is doing well in basketball. We have been fortunate in winning our initial two games, defeating both Lamar and La Junta, Colorado. Above these victories, however, your boy, together with his teammates have conducted themselves in such a manner that they have been and are a credit to the school and the community. You can indeed be proud of the part George has played in this program. Personally, I feel that he has been fortunate in receiving a good, moral family background, and it is indeed a pleasure to coach such a group of boys as these. I thank you for giving me the opportunity to work with him.

Naturally I trust our success in winning continues; however, that is but little importance as compared to the true value of any athletic program. I hope you and your family all enjoy a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year in 1956. If I can be of any assistance, or can answer any inquiry as to your son, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Respectfully yours,

Roy R. Edwards
Coach
