Lee Shrum Dies In Denver Thurs.

Lee H. Shrum, one of the first homesteaders on the Hat Creek divide, died in Denver last Thursday. Mr. Shrum had suffered a stroke more than a year ago and had been an invalid.

Funeral services were held in Denver Saturday.

Mr. Shrum was born in Lewisburg, Ky., and came to the Black Hills in 1905 to haul logs. He married Leona Bottom in Rapid City in 1906. They came to Lusk in 1908, homesteading in the Divide community. Mr. Shrum was very active in the affairs of the county, serving three terms as county commissioner and on several farm boards. He was serving on the school board of District No. 1 at the time the high school, now the Lusk Grade School, was built. His five children graduated from Lusk High School and his daughter Pauline, taught in the Lusk Grade School for five years.

Retirement came to the Shrums in 1943 when they sold their farm to Mr. and Mrs. Emil Klemke and moved to Denver. There they owned and operated a small chicken ranch until four and a half years ago. They had been making their home with their daughter, Mrs. Percy D. Lewis.

Survivors besides his wife and daughter include four sons, Troy of Fremont, Calif., Glen of Cheyenne, Howard of Wyola, Mont., and E. Lee of Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada; two brothers; four sisters; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
