Gladys B. Rumney

Gladys Nadine Rumney, 74, died June 24, 1987 at Newcastle. Services were held Saturday, June 27 at Peet Mortuary in Lusk with Rev. Scott Grimshaw officiating. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mrs. Rumney was born May 10, 1913 at Akron, CO, the daughter of Hugh and Julia Black. The Black family moved to Northern Niobrara County on Boggie Creek in 1918 and ranched there until 1958.

She attended Henrick Hanson grade school, the Central School, District 11 and Lusk High School. While attending high school, Mrs. Rumney lived in Lusk and worked at the Silver Cliff Hotel for her room and board. After high school graduation, she attended one year of Normal Training to become a teacher. Mrs. Rumney then taught one year at the Jim Christian School and one year at the Clay Morris School.

She married James Edward (Eddie) Rumney on Dec. 27, 1934 at Hot Springs, SD. They ranched at Lance Creek until Mr. Rumney's death in 1971.

Mrs. Rumney was postmaster for Spencer from 1936-42. She enjoyed gardening and raising chickens. She was an active 4-H leader and spent many hours helping her four children with their 4-H projects. She took over management of the Riverview Store on Highway 85 near the Cheyenne River in 1959-71.

After the death of her husband, she moved to Torrington until 1976, when she moved to Lusk, living at her sister-in-laws, Fanny Black. She worked part-time at the Stagecoach Museum for several years.

She belonged to the Cheyenne River Extension Club, the Niobrara County Cowbelles, the Order of Eastern Star, First Baptist Church, the Gertrude Brox Circle, War Mothers, Hat Creek Ladies Club, leader of Cheyenne River 4-H Club, and was secretary of the Niobrara Senior Center.

She enjoyed playing cards. She played in many pinochle tournaments in Lusk. Her favorite winter pastime was crocheting. She made many afghans and pillows.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers and one sister.

Survivors include three sons, Raymond of Newcastle, James E. Jr. of Lusk and Dean C, of Denver; one daughter, Betty Jean LaToush of Scott City, KS.; three brothers, LeRoy (Bud) of Sheridan, Charles of Odessa, TX and Clarence A. (Speck) of Lusk; four sisters, Mary Wood of Sacramento, CA, Elizabeth Mastod of Black Duck, MN, Geneva Hammell of Glenrock, and Julia (Judy) Cook of Lusk; 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials to the First Baptist Church of Lusk or to the American Cancer Society, in care of Lusk State Bank, would be appreciated.
