Clair Rice Dies In California

Clair Rice, former Niobrara County Commissioner and rancher here for 25 years died Friday at his home in Long Beach, Calif. He was 75.

Funeral services were held at the Peet Chapel in Lusk Monday afternoon with burial in the Lusk Cemetery. The Rev. Roger Koen of the Baptist church officiated. Pallbearers were Rulo Roberts, W. D. Miller, Ray DeGering, John Siemsen, Roscoe Ross. Honorary bearers were D. A. Shoopman, Wm. Kruse, M. S. Jordan, Len Christian, J. P. Watson.

Organist was Mrs. J. P. Watson and Mrs. Emerson Bonner and Mrs. Lyle Eddy sang "Sweet Hour of Prayer" and "God Be With You."

Clair Snyder Rice was born at Pleasanton, Kan., September 20, 1886 to Nettie C. and Henry R. Rice. He grew up there and was married to Burleigh Blanche Humphreys at Kansas City Mo., December 23, 1912. They moved to Valentine, Nebr., in 1915 living there four years before coming to Niobrara County where they ranched until 1940. Since then they have divided their time between Lusk and Long Beach.

He leaves his wife, a daughter, Mable Leah Drews of Houston, Tex., a son Haskel of Fernandina Beach, Fla. One daughter, Clarice McLean, died in 1950. A brother, Jesse, lives at Lusk. There are ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Other out-of-town relatives attending the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Monzie Humphreys, Donnie Humphreys, Mrs. Walt Nay, Powell; and Mr. and Mrs. Gurney McLean, Casper.
