Margaret Elizabeth Potts
Margaret "Maggie" Potts, 85, died at the Niobrara County Nursing Home last Wednesday, June 2. A memorial service was conducted Saturday at Peet Mortuary Chapel.
Margaret Elizabeth Potts was born in Oklahoma Territory on April 8, 1897, the daughter of George and Mary Turnbull.
She came to Douglas in 1917 and for a time worked for A. D. Spaugh as a telephone operator in the Keeline hotel. When she returned to Douglas she worked at the LaBonte Hotel. She moved to Chugwater where she also worked as a telephone operator at the hotel. In July of 1919 she married John Denman Potts, a brakeman for The Chicago and North Western Railroad. They lived for a short time in Hot Springs, S.D. and then moved to Chadron, Neb., where they lived until Mr. Potts death.
In 1926, Margaret gained title to 640 acres of land north of Lance Creek. In 1949, she moved to Lusk where she was housekeeper for Edward Arnold for 10 years. During this time she became known to many as "Aunt Maggie". The rest of her years she lived in retirement in Lusk.
The Rev. Frank Bozart officiated at the memorial service held June 5. Music was provided by Minerva Watson at the organ and Joy Kaltenheuser sang "In The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
Interment was in the Lusk Cemetery. Pallbearers were Richard James, Everett Kilmer, Otto Krekeler, Kenneth Freeman, Jimmy Shane, and Joe Bruch.
Memorials have been established to the Niobrara Nursing Home.
Mrs. Potts is survived by her daughter Jacqueline Bannerman and her husband Edward of Grants, N. M.; her brother and sister-in-law Roy and Ione Turnbull of Lusk; three grandchildren; John Bannerman of Albuquerque; Candy Bannerman, Quito, Ecuador, South America, and Scott Bannerman, Grants; three great-grandchildren Malissa, Ian and Sarah Bannerman all of Albuquerque.
