Former Area Resident Dies While Hunting
William Hiram Newman, 66, of Torrington, a former resident of northern Goshen County died suddenly Sunday morning Oct. 16 at Pinedale. While on a hunting trip in the mountains he had become ill the previous afternoon and was taken to a medical clinic in the town.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church in Torrington Thursday afternoon, Oct. 20, with Rev. Don L. Morris, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment was in the Valley View Cemetery.
Mr. Newman was born April 10, 1889 at Dorsey, Neb. and came to Wyoming from Valentine, Neb., before Goshen County was formed. He took a homestead on the northern edge of the present county in 1912. January 8, 1915 he married Miss Gertrude Shelbourne at Valentine and she joined him on the ranch. Mr. Newman was a successful rancher of this vicinity for many years, but retired a couple years ago and moved to Torrington. Known as "Hi" by his friends he was active in community affairs and especially devoted much time to the development of the Goshen County Farm Bureau organization.
He is survived by his wife; one son, Keith Newman; seven daughters; Mrs. Wilma Haase of near Torrington; Mrs. Maxine Wilmetti of Rock Springs, Mrs. Idell Shabet of South Bend, Ind., Mrs. Marjorie Howard of San Jose, Cal., Mrs. Violet Bruton of Oxnard, Cal., Mrs. Donna Foscher of Sunnyvale, Cal. and Mrs. Roberta Miller of Ft. Collins, Colo. Twenty two grandchildren also survive.
