Melvin A. Nelson Dies Thursday

Melvin A. Nelson 53, resident of Niobrara County for the last 50 years, died at his home Thursday afternoon. He had suffered from cancer for the past several months.

Rosary services were held Sunday at 8:00 p.m. from the Peet Chapel and Requiem Mass was sung Monday at 10:00 a.m. from St. Leos Catholic Church with Father Cornelius O'Connor officiating. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.

Pallbearers were, Larry Eddy, Floyd Bartos, Henry Amend, Legrand Lee, Orville Hayes and Raymond Edwards.

Melvin Andrew Nelson was born March 17, 1912 in Nebraska, the son of Andrew and Emma Nelson. He and his parents moved to Lance Creek in 1915.

He and Ruby Cecelia Gaukel were married in 1933. They resided in the Lance Creek community until 1938 when they moved to the Keeline area where they have lived since.

Survivors include his widow; three children, Mrs. Gerald (Yvonne) Higgins, Williston, N. Dak., Mrs. William (Myrna) Baker, Garden Grove, Calif., and Derryl Nelson, Big Springs, Texas; four brothers, Fred, Applegate, Ore., Elmer, Hat Creek, Linden, Lance Creek and Lester, Glenrock; four sisters, Mrs. Lurine Jess, Scotia, Nebr., Mrs. Betty Taylor, Big Piney, Wyo., Mrs. Violet Kurtz, Denver, and Mrs. Ramona Wroblewski, Lodi, N. J.; and seven grandchildren. His parents, two grandchildren and three sisters preceded him in death.

Out of town relatives here for the services were Mr. and Mrs. Laurine Jess, Scotia, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Lester Nelson and family, Glenrock, Mrs. Betty Taylor, Big Piney, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Hipsley, Dearborn, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Gaukel and family, Denver, Mr. and Mrs. James Patten and family, Fort Morgan, Colo., Mr. and Mrs. Charles Gaukel and family, Billings, Mont., Mr. and Mrs. Allan Gaukel, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Sperry, Twin Galls, Ida.; Mr. and Mrs. Art Welle, Phoenix, Ariz., Mr. and Mrs. Henry Nelson, Scribner, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Nelson, Bancroft, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Don Patrick, Scotia, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Wilmer Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Bill Gaukel, Burwell, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Hib Brunke, Boulder, Colo., Mr. and Mrs. Glen Henricksen, Casper.
