Walter Meier Dies; Funeral in Harrison

Walter Henry Meier, 82, Alliance, Neb. formerly of the Van Tassell community, died Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Good Samaritan Nursing Home. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 from the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Harrison with Pastor T. C. Jacobsen officiating.

Casket bearers were Carl Engebretsen, Mieford Brewster, Julian Phipps, James Peterson, Bob Fancher, and John Hammond. Burial was in the Harrison Cemetery.

He was born to Charles and Johanna Meier at St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 6, 1887. He married Katherine Winterhalter November 2, 1910, and came to Harrison Nov. 6, 1910. They were the parents of four children, three daughters, Mrs. Theron (Lorraine) Duckworth, Alliance, Neb., Mrs. Walter (Mildred) Zerbst, Lusk, Mrs. Warren (Evelyn) Robertson, Van Tassell, and a son Walter Jr., Aurora, Neb.

Walt, as he was known, homesteaded 10 miles north of Van Tassell shortly after arriving in Harrison. He farmed and ranched until the family home burned January 4, 1933. Selling his land he bought a home in Harrison. Being a painter by trade he devoted full time to painting and painted many of the large ranches in Sioux and Niobrara Counties.

Among some of his favorite pastimes were baseball and fishing. He played on the Kirtley ball team as catcher for a number of years. He was a member of the Lutheran Church in St. Louis and helped establish the present Lutheran Church in Harrison of which he was a member. Survivors besides his four children are his widow, Katherine at the Rest Home Schuyler, Neb; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

His parents, five brothers and one sister died previously. He was the last of the Meier family, his youngest brother Albert died about a month ago.
