James McCune Dies in Lusk Sunday
James E. McCune, 65, of Lusk, died Sunday in the Niobrara County Memorial Hospital from cancer. He had been seriously ill for approximately six months. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon from Peet Chapel with Rev. Otha B. Holcomb officiating. Burial was in the Lusk Cemetery.
Final military rites were accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars under the direction of Chuck Vaughn, commander. Members of the local National Guard formed the firing squad.
Mrs. Otha Holcomb, Mrs. Carl Peterson, L.E. Johnsonbaugh and Donley Unruh sang "In the Garden" and "Precious Lord Take My Hand." Mrs. J.P. Watson was organist.
Active pallbearers were Harve Ledford, Emerson Bonner, Robert Black, Albert Penn, Henry Herbers and Lafe Culver, Sr. Honorary pallbearers were Anthon Hansen, Matt Bast, Ed Thompson, Elmer Postel, Bud Butler, Joe Leimser, Sr., Clifford Lindley and William Brunckhorst.
James Elsworth McCune was born November 5, 1892 in Colton County, Ohio the son of William Franklin and Maggie Park McCune.
At the age of seven he moved with his parents to Petersburg, Nebr. where he spent his youth. He entered the United States Army in 1917, serving in the 350th Infantry in Italy, France and Germany.
He was married to Lillie M. Carlisle June 21, 1922 at O'Neil, Nebr. To this marriage three daughters were born, Virginia, Shirley and Carolyn. Mr. and Mrs. McCune celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary last June.
They came to Niobrara County 30 years ago and have resided in Lusk most of that time. He was engaged as a carpenter.
Jimmy, as he was known, was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and commander of the Lusk Post in 1957. As a young man he was a member of the Mason and Odd Fellows Lodge. He was a long time member of the carpenters union.
Survivors include his wife, three daughters, Mrs. Richard Kant, Lance Creek; Mrs. Philip M. Hall, Sheridan and Carolyn of Lusk; and three grandchildren, Ricky and Stevie Kant and Terrie Hall. A brother, William of Richmond, Calif. also survives. His parents and a brother previously died.
