Memorial services for Walter "Walt" W. Berry, age 88 were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, February 16, at the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church in Torrington with Pastor Howard Roseberry and Rev. Peggy Brown co-officiating. Burial followed in Valley View Cemetery.
Walt died on Feb. 14 at the Torrington Community Hospital following a lengthy illness. Cremation has already taken place.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial donations be directed to either the "Special Touch" program or to the Goshen County Library Foundation, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
Walter was born on Nov. 5, 1913, on a farm two miles north of Torrington, the son of Willison and Lois (Reid) Berry. He graduated from Torrington High School. He went on to attend the University of Wyoming.
On May 23, 1941, he married Alice Opdal in Greeley, Colo. He then served in the U. S. Army from 1943 until 1946. Following his discharge, he worked on a cattle ranch in Jackson Hole, before moving to his own ranch 25 miles north of Torrington in 1949.
Walt was a member of the First Wyoming United Presbyterian Church in Torrington and the Church at Jay Em in Jay Em. During his lifetime he served as board member for the North Platte Soil Conservation District, Prairie Center Fire District, Goshen County Stockgrowers Association and the Goshen County School District #17. He was also a Goshen County 4-H alumnus. He was an avid reader but his greatest interest was that of being a rancher.
He is survived by his wife Alice of Torrington; a son Charles "Bumper" Berry and his wife of Torrington; daughters Anne Yates Leimser and her husband of Lusk, and Elaine Griffith and her husband of Lusk; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and his brothers, Frank and John Berry.
