Services for Joe B. Madden, 75, were held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 19th at the First United Methodist Church. Burial was in Valley View Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial gifts to the Goshen County Community Scholarship Fund in care of Madden Brothers or the Community Healthcare Foundation at Community Hospital. Joe died January 12, 1998 at the home of Jody and Craig Haythorn in Arthur, Neb.; after a lengthy illness.
He was born in Wheatland, Wyoming on October 15, 1922, the son of Joe and Nancy Madden. He graduated from Fort Laramie High School and then operated the Torrington Packing Company and auctioneered in North Platte and Scottsbluff, Neb. He later owned and operated the Lusk and Wheatland Livestock Commission Companies for many years. One of his greatest pleasures was working with young people.
Joe was a member of the Rodeo Cowboys Association and was a skilled roper and bulldogger. In 1954 he was runner-up to the World Championship in steer wrestling. He married Glenna Atkinson in 1951, and they were parents of three children. He married Leslie Laymon in 1972 in Salt Lake City; they resided in Douglas and Wheatland. He was a devoted husband and father.
He is survived by his wife Leslie of Wheatland, Wyo.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Shawn and Pollie and Lex and Jamie Madden of Torrington; daughter and son-in-law Jody and Craig Haythorn of Arthur, Neb.; sister Peggy Caldwell of Truckee, Ca.; step-mother June Bald and half brother Clay Taylor, both of Jackson, Wyo.; two nephews; eight grandchildren and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The casket will be closed. The Colyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
