Mrs. Manning died Sunday, July 30, 1995, at the McComb's Retirement Center in Douglas. She was born August 23, 1913, in Fremont, Neb. the daughter of Leonard and Pearl (Whitehall) Heine. In December 1915, the family homesteaded at Jireh, 15 miles west of Lusk or two miles east of Keeline. It was here that five more children were born, Richard, George, Margaret, Mary, and Elbert Heine. She graduated from the Manville High School in 1931. Her first job was working in a Keeline Hotel and Grocery testing cream for Dora Olson, her wages were room, board and clothing. In the spring of 1936, while she was working as a waitress in the LaBonte Hotel at Douglas she met a local rancher and homesteader, Carl Leslie Manning. During the summer of 1936, Genevieve worked as a waitress in Greeley, Colo. Upon returning to Douglas, the couple married August 16, 1936, in Ogallala, Neb. She quit her job at the LaBonte and the couple moved to Carl's ranch north of Douglas. Four children blessed this union, Donald in 1939, Roy in 1940, Warren in 1943, and James Harry in 1946. In 1944, the family moved to Glenrock so the boys could go to school. In 1951 Carl bought an 80 acre farm in Wheatland, and the family once again moved. Still maintaining the ranch north of Douglas, the family traveled back and forth between Wheatland and Douglas. On July 20, 1958, Carl died in Wheatland. Not long after Carl's death, Genevieve sold the farm and moved the family into the town of Douglas, and she never remarried. In 1989 she sold her home in Douglas and moved to Casper until illness brought her back to Douglas in 1995.
She is survived by three sons, Donald, Warren and wife Judith Russell all of Douglas and James Harry and wife Veletia Maylan of Wheatland; one brother, Elbert of Lusk; two sisters, Margaret Heine-Hunt of Casper and Mary Heine-Birch of Lusk; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carl; one son, Roy; and two brothers, Richard and George Heine.
When asked how she would like to be remembered she said, "as a good woman who loved others and as the mother of four sons and two daughters-in-law." She also wished to be remembered as a life-long resident of Wyoming. She was a member of the Evansville Christian Church. She enjoyed family, friends, church, needlework, cards, and driving her car.
A memorial to the American Cancer Society or the Converse County Cancer Fund in care of Converse County Bank, P.O. Box 689, Douglas, Wyoming 82633 would be appreciated by the family. The Converse Funeral Chapel of Douglas is in charge of arrangements.
