Martha Lyman
Early Day Hat Creek Resident Dies in Oregon
Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Lyman, 88, an early day resident of Hat Creek, were held from the First Church of Christ of Elmira, Ore., April 2. She died March 30.
Mrs. Lyman was born at Plattsmouth, Nebr., December 30, 1887, the eldest daughter in a family of 11 children of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dyson.
Her family with a history dating to the Revolutionary War moved from Maryland where their home joined the George Washington estate on the Potomac, to Nebraska in the 1800's. It was in Rock County, Nebr., she met and married Ernest Bussinger. They were the parents of two daughters, now Mrs. Lue Osborn of Hat Creek and Mrs. Richard Nickeson of Elmira.
In November 1915 Mrs. Lyman homesteaded on what is now the site of the Hat Creek Post Office and owned by the Osborn family. She lived here until 1938 when she moved to Elmira on the advice of a doctor to seek a lower elevation.
Her last years were spent in the Ivorena Nursing Home at Eugene, Ore.
Beside her two daughters she is survived by one brother, four sisters, eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Lyman received a Pioneer Homestead Certificate from the Pioneer Association of Wyoming last summer. She had been one of the earliest members of the Hat Creek Valley Club while living there.
