Walter Lohr

Niobrara County Native Walter Lohr, 56, died Monday at Niobrara County Memorial Hospital.

He suffered from a heart condition.

Mr. Lohr, eldest son of Ruby and the late Harlan Lohr was born at the Siemsen place in the Kirtley community. At the age of 1, he moved with his parents to the present family home.

Mr. Lohr attended the East and West Kirtley schools, and earned his general education diploma in 1972. He was a member of the Kirtley community 4-H club for several years.

Walt grew to manhood in the Kirtley community, working with his father farming and ranching.

He enlisted in the Marines and served at Paris Island, S. C., Camp LeJeune, N. C. and at Naval Hospitals in Oceanside, Corona and Sa Pedro, Calif.

Mr. Lohr was married to Dorthy Handel in 1951 at the home of her parents in rural Hayes County near Wauneta, Nebr. They made their home on the late John Lohr ranch where Walt and his father ranched.

In 1957, the Lohrs moved to Lusk and Walt worked for Frontier Lumber for 13 years. For the last seven years, he had been working as office manager of D. C. Drilling Co. here.

Mr. Lohr was a member of the Wieten Dupes American Legion Post, in which he had served as commander and also held other offices.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Lohr is survived by two sons, Roy and David, both of Lusk; his mother Ruby Lohr of Lusk; four sisters, Edna Kazandjian of Whittier, Calif., Ida McAdoo of Westminster, Calif., Grace Wilkison of Manville, and Mary Porter of Lusk; two brothers, George of Buckhead, Ga., and John of Lusk; and 22 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Gene.

A service will be held this Friday at 2 p.m. at Peet Mortuary, and burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in the Kirtley community.
