Mrs. Joe Kuhn Dies in Arizona Feb. 1; Final Rites Held in Lusk Wednesday

After a nearly three year courageous fight against cancer Mrs. Joe Kuhn, 63, of Phoenix, Arizona, formerly of Lusk, died in Phoenix about 2:15 a.m. Feb. 1.

Rosary services were held in the Paradise Chapel in Phoenix at 8:00 p.m. Friday. High mass and interment were held in Lusk starting at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6. Father M. J. McBrien of St. Leo's Catholic Church officiated. Active pallbearers were Emerson Bonner, Hugo Payne, Walt Farrell, Nick Kaan, Charles Gaukel and Bob Cowell. Honorary pallbearers were Harlan Lohr, James Hoblit, George Kuns, Coye Jennewein, Oscar E. Bostrom and Carl Spacht.

Out of respect to a former Lusk business woman and her husband, Lusk business houses were closed during the services Wednesday morning.

High mass and O Pie Jesu was sung by Mrs. Carl Bruch, Miss Pauline Bruch and W. D. Wasserburger with Mrs. H. L. Wasserburger, Sr. accompanying as organist.

BORN IN NEBRASKA

Gertrude J. Olds was born June 9, 1893 in Hemingford, Neb., the only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clark Olds. November 12, 1913 she married Joseph J. Kuhn. Only eleven days after their marriage Kuhns moved to this area and have been a part of it ever since. They settled on a homestead near Jireh, and Mrs. Kuhn was soon named postmistress. Later they operated a grocery store. In 1925 Kuhns moved to Lusk which they have called home ever since even though they moved to Phoenix in 1949 because of Mrs. Kuhn's failing health. In Lusk Mrs. Kuhn worked in the Railway Express office and played the piano in the theatre while the silent pictures were shown. Later Kuhns purchased the International Harvester business and Mrs. Kuhn was a familiar figure in the office as well as the parts department. Ever since moving to Arizona Kuhns have maintained their legal residence in Lusk.

In addition to rearing a large family and working Mrs. Kuhn, who seemed to have boundless energy, was organist in St. Leo's Catholic Church and directed the choir. She was a member of the Lusk American Legion Auxiliary and Lusk B.P.O. Does.

Besides her husband Mrs. Kuhn is survived by four children Mrs. Helena Gibson, Phoenix, Mrs. Gertrude Brooks, Torrington, Greg and Frank, Lusk; one brother, Alex Olds, Hemingford, Neb., 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death was one son, Clark, who was killed during World War II while a corporal in the Marine Corp, and two brothers Frank and Harold Olds.
