Velma Zimmerman Jordan

Velma Zimmerman Jordan, age 89, of Lusk entered eternal rest at her home on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, the day before her 90th birthday. A celebration of her life was held Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Lusk with Pastor Tom Strock officiating. Interment followed in the Bodarc Cemetery northeast of Harrison, Nebr.

Velma and her twin sister Elma were born of Thanksgiving Day Nov. 26, 1914 to Cleve and Millie Eberspecher Zimmerman in Harrison. Her early years were spent in the Bodarc Community. During the winter when she was 12, she suffered a near fatal rupture of the appendix, causing a year of school absence to recuperate. She graduated from Sioux County High School in 1933.

On Aug. 14, 1937, Velma married Daniel E Jordan in Ardmore, S.D. They had been married for 60 years at the time of Dan's death. To this union, three children were born. They lived and raised their family in the Indian Creek area of Niobrara County on Dan's mother's homestead. Velma moved to Lusk in 1981 due to her failing eyesight.

Until the time of her death, Velma loved to play cards with her family and friends. She was an avid bridge player which was reflected in her many memberships in various bridge clubs. As a founding member of the Indian Creek Bridge Club, her love of Bridge is mirrored in her 55-year commitment to them. Her charter membership of the Indian Creek Extension Club and years of dedication to the Niobrara County Cattlewomen earned Velma honorary memberships. She was eager to celebrate her 90th birthday with family and friends.

Velma is survived by her son Dale and his wife Dorothy Jordan of Lusk; her daughter Sherry and her husband Jack Larson of Scottsbluff, Nebr.; her grandchildren, Kendy Rising, Pam Rising, Diana Martin, Danese and Jeff Reed, Dean and Kathleen Jordan and her great-grandchildren will miss her. She also leaves behind her sister Hilda Mae and her husband L. K. (Boots) Harder, her brother Keith and his wife Olita Zimmerman, sister-in-law Marcella Zimmerman and a boatload of other survivors.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dan, daughter and son-in-law Carol and Durl Holtz and their infant daughter Dixie Lee, her twin sister Elma and brothers Harry and Emery Zimmerman.

A memorial has been established to the Lusk/Niobrara Ambulance or the donor's choice.

Cicmanec-Pier Funeral Home in Lusk is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
