J.M. Hungate, former Superintendent here, dies
J.M. (Bob) Hungate of Cheyenne, former Niobrara school superintendent, memorial service was held at the First Baptist Church in Cheyenne January 27. Dr. Morgan Thompson officiated, with assistance from the Rev. Mike Dunagan.
Hungate, 84, was school district administrator here for nine years. He was born in Herman, Neb., in 1898 and lived in Wyoming for more than 35 years. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, was past master of the Lusk Masonic Lodge and was a member of Wyoming Consistory No. 1. He died at Memorial Hospital in Cheyenne Jan. 23.
Hungate received his AB degree in education and psychology at Grand Island, Neb., and his masters at the University of Nebraska. After 21 years in the field of public school administration, including his nine year in Lusk, he accepted a one-year fellowship at the University of Wyoming to complete his doctorate degree.
He also held the position of chief of the Vocational Rehabilitation and Education Division for the State of Wyoming for 41/2 years, was education director for the junior college in Torrington for 3 years and worked in the field of education for the Air Force.
Hungate is survived by his wife Maude and his son Win Hungate, both of Cheyenne; one daughter Mary Jane Goodell, San Antonio, Tex.; one sister, Ethyl Erb, Decorah, Iowa; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother Cecil.
Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery. The family asks that any memorials be made to the First Baptist Church Memorial Fund or to Gideon Bibles.
