Winona Pearl Heine

Longtime area resident Winona Pearl Heine died last Wednesday at her Keeline home at the age of 93.

Mrs. Heine and her late husband, Leonard John Heine, had homesteaded south of Jireh in 1907.

A native of Canton, Ill., Mrs. Heine was the daughter of James Calvin Whitehill and Josephine Marie Silvernail Whitehill.

As a young child, she moved with her parents to Shenandoah, Iowa, where her father took up dentistry.

Winona worked in Fremont, Neb., where she met and married Mr. Heine. He died here in 1974.

Mrs. Heine was a member of the Methodist Church.

Mrs. Heine had lived with her daughter, Mary Birch, in Keeline for the last five years.

In addition to her daughter Mary, Mrs. Heine is survived by two other daughters, Genevieve Manning of Douglas and Margaret Hunt of Casper; three sons, Richard of Lusk, George of Casper and Elbert of Manville; 20 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Heine was preceded in death by two brothers, one of whom was Earl Whitehill of Oregon City, Ore., who died in February; seven sisters; and two grandchildren.

The Rev. Henry Babis officiated at a Saturday service at Peet Mortuary.

Minerva Watson played the organ, while soloist Marilyn Cockreham sang "Beautiful Isle" and "Rock of Ages."

Burial followed at Lusk Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Edwin Tschacher, Neil Grant, Richard Ladwig, Dan Gaukel, Arlo Bowen and Allen Heins.

The family would prefer memorials to the Niobrara County Senior Center.
