A funeral Mass was celebrated for Mary Kathryn McLaughlin, 97, at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 16 at St. Rose Catholic Church with the Rev. Father Kevin Koch officiating. A Wake/Rosary service was held on Monday evening at 6 p.m. at the church.
Mary K. died on May 13 at the Heritage Health Care Center in Gering, Neb. Visitation hours were held on Monday from noon until 5 p.m. at the Colyer Funeral Home Chapel. The casket was open at the Rosary service and closed at the Mass. Cremation that took place following the services. Those who wish may direct memorial contributions in Mary K's memory to the Heritage Health Care Center.
Mary Kathryn was born on July 12, 1908, in Harrison, Neb. the daughter of John S. and Mary E. (Griffith) Bourret. She grew up and received her education: graduating from Harrison High School in 1926. Mary K. became a homesteader, staking her claim in Sioux County, Neb. She went on to receive her Bachelor's in education from the University of Nebraska and taught school in Nebraska and Wyoming for a few years. Mary K. then worked for the Soil Conservation Service in Torrington where she met Joe McLaughlin. The couple married and Mary K. worked for various businesses in Torrington until she retired.
She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Cottonwood Country Club, and the Council of Catholic Women. Mary K. enjoyed playing bridge and belonged to several clubs. She was a woman known for her great wit, beauty, intelligence, charm and her ability to always look forward.
She is survived by two daughters, Lynn Kelly of Denver, Colo.; and Mary Jo "Ginger" McLaughlin of Torrington; a sister Rosalie Warren of Ft. Laramie; three grandchildren, Ryan Kelly and his wife Judy Smith of Denver, Colo.; Christopher Kelly and his wife Vanessa of Montclair, N.J.; Leslie Kelly her husband Mike Crimmins of Denver, Colo.; and two great-grandchildren Kathryn Kelly Crimmins and Claire Kelly Crimmins. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mary Ellen; her husband, Joe; and two brothers Charles and Johnny.
