A memorial gathering will be held Friday, May 9, 4-8 p.m., at the Senior Center in Underwood, N.D. Family and friends are invited to gather there for lunch, fellowship, and to share memories.
Charles W. (Bill) Hawley died May 1, 2003, following a long illness.
Charles was born April 12, 1925 (Easter Sunday), near Walsenberg, Colo., the eldest child of Charles C. and Caroline (Bastian) Hawley. The family moved to a farm north of Underwood, N.D., where Charles attended country school, and then high school in Turtle Lake, N.D. In 1942, he joined the Navy and served in the South Pacific, returning home after the war ended.
On June 5, 1947, Charles married Irene Enyart. They farmed in various locations, spending eight years south of Baldwin, N.D., and 20 years south of Goodrich, N.D. Following the sale of that farm, they moved to Bismarck, N.D., and then to Denver where Charles worked in construction. They later moved to Port St. Lucie, Fla., where he helped rebuild the Club Med and worked in other construction.
Charles and Irene retired and eventually moved to Lusk. Irene died of a brain tumor in 1996, with Charles caring for her at home with the help of family, friends, and Home Health. They had been married for over 50 years.
In September 1997, Charles married his friend and neighbor Verna Pfister. They later built a home in Aurora, Colo. Charles developed Alzheimers and suffered stokes and a heart attack. Verna cared for him at home as long as possible, and continued her devoted care when he entered a care center.
Charles especially enjoyed children (and they enjoyed him) and loved his diverse family.
Charles is survived by a large, loving family including his seven children, Charlotte Martin of Bismarck, N.D.; Charles Hawley of Appleton, Wisc.; Ruth Hecker of Aurora, Colo.; Mark Hawley of Montrose, Colo.; Steven Hawley of Sumner, Wash.; Raymond Hawley of Devils Lake, N.D.; and Linda Hawley of Mandan, N.D.' four step children, Judy Van Wagoner of Anaheim, Calif.; Jack Pfister of Craig, Colo.; David Pfister of Thornton, Colo.; and Gary Pfister of Petersburg, Va.; five brothers, Edward Hawley of Longview, Wash.; Richard (Sweet P) Hawley of Powell, WY.; Donald (Esther) Hawley of Alder, Mont.; James Hawley of Menoken, N.D.; and John Hawley of Augusta, Ga.; seven sisters-in-law, Ione Quenzer of Lead, S.
