Georgia B. Hassed

Mrs. Georgia B. Hassed of New Hartford, Conn., died Friday, Dec. 19, shortly after being admitted to the Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Conn.

Mrs. Hassed was a native of Wyoming. She was born Jan. 22, 1884, daughter of the late George W. and Sarah Bailey, pioneer settlers on a ranch 12 miles east of Saratoga. Her father was killed before she was born. Later the family moved to Saratoga, so the children could attend school. After graduation from high school, Mrs. Hassed taught at a small country school and saved enough money so she could attend the University of Wyoming, enrolling in 1904.

Becoming a nurse had always been a dream of Mrs. Hassed's and in 1908 she received her degree in nursing from the training school facility of Wyoming General Hospital in Rock Springs. She then returned to Laramie and embarked on a nursing career that spanned many years.

In 1910 she married Walter E. Zipfel and their two children Richard Bailey Zipfel and Barbara Zipfel were both born in Laramie. Richard Zipfel died in February, 1975.

Mrs. Hassed was appointed public health nurse for the state of Wyoming and held that office from 1927 to 1935. For many years she was a member of the Wyoming State nurses examining board. In 1935 Mrs. Hassed and Barbara moved to Lusk where she was employed by Dr. W. H. Hassed as his office assistant.

Dr. and Mrs. Hassed were married in 1936 and the family moved into a new home on Main Street where Mrs. Hassed lived for almost 40 years.

She was a resident here until 1975 when she moved to New Hartford, Conn., to make her home with Dana and Barbara Gowen. Always an ardent supporter of the west, in her heart she still considered herself a true Wyomingite.

Mrs. Hassed was a charter member of Alpha Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star. She also belonged to the Past Matron's Club and American Legion Auxiliary in Lusk.

For most of her life, Mrs. Hassed was an Episcopalian and for many years was active in St. Mathews Cathedral in Laramie and St. George's Church in Lusk where she sang in the choir and supported the church's Guild.

Services in memory of Mrs. Hassed were held in Lusk at St. George's Church Tuesday, Dec. 23, with the Rev. Charles Wallis officiating. Active pallbearers were Dana Gowen, Walter Fernau, George Dixon, Otto Krekeler, Paul Percival and Louis Mandis, Cheyenne. Honorary pallbearers were William Miller, C. E. Marvin, Sherrill Drum of Casper and Herman Rife, Torrington.

Mrs. Edna DeCastro was organist and Mark Lohr soloist for the service. Mrs. Hassed was buried beside her husband in the Lusk cemetery.
Besides her daughter Barbara, Mrs. Hassed is survived by four grandchildren, Dana II, Hartford, Conn.; Rebecca Towson, Md.; Phoebe, San Diego and Milan, New Hartford and one great-grandson Seth Bishop of San Diego; also her daughter-in-law Maxine Zipfel, Billings, Mont., and son-in-law Dana Gowen, New Hartford, and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials to St. George's Church or the Niobrara Nursing Home would be appreciated by the family.

While in Lusk, Mr. and Mrs. Gowen were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walt Fernau and Helen Veirs, close friends of Mrs. Hassed for many years.
