Laura Lucille Chambers Swanke
Laura Lucille Chambers Swanke was born in Lusk, on Jan. 21, 1921, to Frank W. and Leona Barber Chambers. Lucille died on Dec. 30, 2005, in Houston, Texas, after a long battle with ovarian cancer. Lucille graduated from Cheyenne High School in 1939 and the University of Wyoming in 1943. She attended college on a scholarship and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma. Lucille later was 50-year member of P.E.O.
Lucille met Raymond Robert Swanke at the University; they married in Denver, Colo., on Oct. 1, 1945. Their life together ranged from Tulsa, Okla., to Denver to several locations in Tx. Lake Jackson, Texas, was their home in 1952; after being transferred to Bay City and Houston, and a 1966 posting in Holland, they returned to Lake Jackson in 1979. Born on March 25, 1954, Stephen Michael joined the household in April. Susan Elizabeth (Sunny), born on Feb. 10, 1956, was chosen as Steve's little sister, and the family was complete. Ray passed away on Aug.11, 1998.
Lucille's interests ranged from horseback riding in the early years to water-skiing, snow skiing and her passionate love of gold in her later years. Lucille was outgoing, fun loving, funny, smart, stubborn, kind, caring and so strong. She is survived by Steve (Elizabeth) of Melbourne, Fla.; Sunny (Milan) Hanc of Richmond, Texas (with whom Lucille was living); Six granddaughters, Lori Kislow (Kevin) Ham, Elissa Rae and Brianna Lucille Hanc, Teresa, Laura and Katy Schindler; One great-granddaughter, Olivia Ham.
Visitation was from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006, at the Lakewood Funeral Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan 4, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Lake Jackson.
