John Hammond

John Hammond, lifelong resident of the Kirtley community, died at his ranch home Monday, July 5. Memorial service is being conducted at Peet Mortuary Chapel today (Thursday) at 2:00 p.m.

John Hial Hammond was born September 15, 1920, at Kirtley, the oldest son of George and Berlie Hammond. He was a member of the fourth generation on the home place in the Kirtley community, northeast of Lusk.

John received his education in schools at Kirtley and Van Tassell. On June 4, 1936, he and Mary Seegrist were married at Harrison. They were members of the Harrison square dance club.

Officiating at the memorial service will be Mark Lohr. Music is being provided by Minerva Watson, organist, and Mr. Lohr who will sing "The Old Rugged Cross" and "In the Garden."

Pallbearers are Clyde Robertson, Ron Shoults, John Lohr, Jim Story, Bob Phipps and Dale Jordan. Honorary bearers were Warren Robertson, Bob Fancher, Rex Shoults, Julian Phipps, Jim Peterson, Dan Jordan, Everett Thomas, Emory Zimmerman and Harry Zimmerman.

Interment is in the Lusk Cemetery.

Mr. Hammond is survived by his wife Mary of the family ranch; three daughters, Evelyn Kilmer of Valentine, Neb., Carol Zerbe, Lusk, and Norma Dufek of Green River; eight grandsons, Willis Kilmer of Douglas, Kelly and Travis Kilmer of Valentine, Rick, Brian and Craig Zerbe of Lusk, Joe and Eric Dufek of Green River and one great-grandson, Ryan Kilmer of Douglas; a sister, Helen Alcock, Redondo Beach, Calif., and a brother George of Sunnyvale, Calif.
